mwlgc logoWind-Up Banquet
and Annual General Meeting

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 6 and plan to join with other club members
for an evening of good food, fun and prizes!
Tickets are $30 each and are available from any member of the Executive.
You don’t want to miss out on this amazing annual event.

Also, don’t miss out on your chance to win a series of 3 Golf Lessons ($195 value) with Bruce Hardy, CPGA Teaching Professional. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 – available from any member of the Executive. The draw will be held at the wind-up banquet on October 6th.

Club Championship Information

The Club Championship is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30.  I would encourage all members to feel welcome to join in this tournament.  You do  need a handicap so that you can be placed in a flight with other golfers of similar abilities.  The other requirement is that you have played a minimum of 3 x 18-hole games (or 6 x 9-hole games) at the Mill Woods golf course this season.  You must have entered these scores into the Golf Canada website.  This is a great tournament to meet other members of our club – day ladies and business ladies don’t often get a chance to play together – this is one of the occasions that happens.

The sign-up for the Club Championship is posted in the clubroom upstairs at the golf course.  There is no extra charge to play in this tournament.  You are responsible for your green fees.  The sign-up deadline is Friday, August 21.

Update from the Executive

The first official day of summer is almost here.  We hope you are all enjoying your golf season.

We have had a few questions/concerns brought forward to us:

1.  Business Ladies – We understand there have been problems with tee times.  Nine hole players are having to book in earlier slots as the later slots are filled.  As a result, those players wanting to play 18 holes are having difficulty getting their rounds in, or have had to finish the last nine holes alone.

We have asked to have more tee times opened up for our 9 hole players from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.  We would request that the earlier tee times (3:30-4:30) be left for those players wanting to do 18 holes.  Perhaps the 9 hole players in the later tee times could look at having their meal before heading out to the course so your night won’t be so late–just something to consider.  We are trying to make this work for our league, as well as for the golf course.  We will monitor how this is working out and would appreciate your feedback, both positive and negative, as to how this plays out over the next few weeks.

As before, any unused tee times will be released to the public on Friday.

2.   Cross-Over Tee Times – We have had requests from members, who, due to various circumstances, have requested to occasionally play in Days when registered in Business, or vice versa.  If you think you might need a cross-over tee time please forward your request to our Vice- President Rebecca Fricker,  e-mail:  rebecca.fricker@shaw.ca   We will try to facilitate this for you in advance.
Thank you,
Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club Executive

2015 Edmonton Ladies Amateur, Senior and Super-Senior Championship

This tournament was played on Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16 at the Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club in St. Albert. Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club once again had a good showing in the Senior and  Super-Senior divisions, but no one from the club played in the Amateur division. We had nine ladies playing and they represented MWLGC well.

Congratulations to Mary-Lou Fitzgerald and Nancy Gall who were both Runner Up Low Gross in their respective flights and divisions.

Visitor Days Information

Thanks to everyone for their questions about Visitor Days.  It’s nice to see the interest in both visiting and hosting another club.

We have had some delays in getting a cost quotation from Raven Crest, but have decided to have the sign-up available upstairs after golf on Monday, June 15.  You will be able to sign-up for both Raven Crest and Leduc at this time.

Both events have coffee and muffins/banana bread at 7:30 a.m. with a scheduled start at 8:30 a.m.

The day we are visiting Raven Crest is Tuesday, July 14.  The shotgun start time is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by lunch.  Raven Crest is allowing for 30 players to attend.  We hope to have a cost for you at the time of sign-up and would prefer payment in the form of a cheque made out to “Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club”.

We are hosting Leduc on Monday, July 27.  We will have a modified shot-gun start at 8:30 a.m., followed by lunch.  The cost for lunch is $25/person.  Payment is preferred in the form of a cheque made out to “Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club”.

Spring Social Recap

We had a great turn out of 125 ladies at our Spring Social on Tuesday, April 14, and I think it is safe to say, judging by the buzz and laughter, everyone had a great time. The evening started off with some socializing and then a quick business meeting where the minutes of the annual fall meeting, the 2014 financial statement and 2015 budget were approved. The Executive was introduced and the process of filling the empty Vice President position explained. Marty Winch, Head Golf Professional, brought greetings from the golf course and told us that all 18 greens wintered really well and the course was in great shape. Staff in the pro-shop, and green fees remain the same as last year. There are some plans in the works for course improvement – paved cart paths – and there are all new golf carts. Marty also shared with us that the Ladies Club receives 20% off all clothing for the entire season, and 10% off golf clubs. Then the real fun began, Leslie McEvoy organized a fashion show for us, featuring some of the clothing available this year in the Pro Shop. Leslie did a great job of lining up 12 “Cindy Crawfords” and a couple of “Fabios”. Many thanks to all of the good sports who agreed to participate–you were amazing!Once the applause and laughter died down, we introduced our new website and did a quick run through. Initial comments were positive and we hope that everyone will take some time to explore and discover the wealth of information available.

Spring Social

All members, new and returning, are invited to join us at the Mill Woods Clubhouse (aka Woodvale Community League), main floor, 4540 – 50 Street, on Tuesday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m. for the Spring Social and official start of the 2015 Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club season. We are very excited to see everyone again and share plans for this upcoming year.

The Spring Social is the kick-off but we are required to do some review of last year’s business (minutes from the fall meeting and 2014 financials – copies attached), and then we can look forward to 2015 (budget – copy attached, launch of our new website, sign-ups for the Marshall and Podersky Interclub play, New Member Orientation and Rules & Handicap Clinic).

There will be light snacks, a cash bar and lots of information to share and fun to be had. Looking forward to seeing one and all!
