Those who want to participate in the ELGA tournament will need a current handicap and a CLGA membership. If you have not already renewed your golf Canada membership you will need to get a cheque for $35.70 to Jane Thiell ASAP — prior to July 18. Please make the cheque payable to: Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club. There is still time to enter your 2020 games before the tournament.

Hello Ladies

We are pleased to announce our new dates and location for the Edmonton Ladies Amateur, Senior, and Super-Senior Championship. Our newest EGA member, The Ranch, will be hosting our tournament on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 19. The cost of registration includes: 2 days of golf, cart, GPS in cart, range, and meals both days.

Please see the attached poster. Ladies will be categorized based on age so if you would like that changed, you will need to contact me. Please post this poster in your Pro Shop.

We will be practicing physical distancing and there are other rules and regulations. Tables in the restaurant are spaced more than 6 feet apart. You will need to let me know if you have dietary concerns. We are limited to 2 volunteers, and the course will provide greeters. AB Golf will provide Rules Referees but there will be no spotters or other assistants. Players will not be allowed any caddies or spectators. You can check out Covid rules on the AB Golf website.

Information including Local rules and Covid rules will be sent to registrants prior to the tournament.

Effective June 16th, the Day Ladies tee time booking window will be increased to 11:10 a.m. (8:20 to 11:10 a.m.). The added 50 minutes will help you all tremendously in booking a tee time.

The rain is supposed to stop by Tuesday, hopefully the forecast is correct!

AHS – Review of the golf guidelines outlined by AHS.

 

It’s almost the end of July and I think we have finally experienced a couple of days of summer. Hopefully there will be many more sunny and warm days to come.

A lot has happened to this point of the season – The Classic, Scotch 2-Ball and Better Ball tournaments have all been played. Congrats to all the winners – check out who they were by clicking on the links above for each of the tournaments. Marshall Cup and Podersky Cup have wrapped up and Mill Woods ended up in 14th place for Marshall and 16th place for Podersky. Our Match Play competition is well underway and Visiting Days both home and away have been played. Whew! All of these events have been successful and hope everyone who participated enjoyed themselves and had a great time.

The Edmonton Golf Association tournament was played on July 14 and 15 and you can find a reflection of the experience on our News page.

Don’t forget the Club Championship is just around the corner and a sign-up sheet has been posted in the Club Room (behind the restaurant). This 2-day tournament will be played during regular Tuesday play on August 20 as well as the following Saturday, August 24.

The 2019 season for the Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club has taken off with a bang!

We started with the Spring Social/Meeting on April 9 in a banquet room at the Woodvale Community League facility (clubhouse at the golf course). Heather Musselwhite, our fearless leader, has provided a recap on the News page of the website.

Janice Martin, who looks after our website, requested the feedback of the club’s membership in the form of a questionnaire. More information also on the News page. Also, regarding the website, June and July calendars have been updated with the Visiting Days information so if you have already printed off these two pages, that information will be missing. The Player’s Manual has also been updated with the information about the loonie pot – see below.

April 16 was an opportunity for new members to find out more about the club at the New Member Orientation meeting.

On April 23, Gina Loree and Meril Singer offered the Rules and Handicap Clinic which was well attended, probably because of all the new Rules that took effect January 1, 2019. Gina and Meril had hand-outs available and extra copies are available on the credenza in the Club Room if you were not able to attend the clinic. We were also reminded of the Local Rules which were sent out by email to everyone and are also listed on the News page of the website.

Our Visiting Days Committee has been busy and have already provided us with details of our hosting day which will see Sturgeon Valley Ladies Club visiting us on June 11. Details on how to sign up were sent out by email and are also available on the News page.

One last bit of information included the update from the Executive regarding the weekly loonie pot which is now a toonie pot which will be split between the club and the weekly winner. Details are, you guessed it, on the News page.

That pretty much sums up what has occurred to date. Other than the fact that our first day of club play, April 30, was cancelled because of snow, it looks like we are off to an amazing start to the season.

Yes, Spring is in the air and with it comes the excitement of knowing the 2019 golf season is just around the corner. The Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club is expecting to start club play on April 30 this year. To join the club see our Membership Information page for all the details and a link to the registration form. Let anyone you think might be interested in joining our club know that we do still have some spots available.

The Spring newsletter is also now available and can be downloaded here. 

Our Spring Social/Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mill Woods Clubhouse and includes a business portion as well as a cash bar and 50/50 tickets. The Pro Shop will be open with the discount passes available along with this year’s new inventory. Sign-up sheets for Marshall Cup, Podersky Cup, New Member’s Orientation, and the Rules and Handicap Clinic will all be available that evening. This year again, Bruce Hardy, the teaching pro at Mill Woods, will be offering “Swing Lessons with Bruce.” You will be able to sign-up for lessons at the Spring Social. The lessons are $30 and payment must be made when you sign-up. 

The calendars for Club Activities for 2019 have been now posted to the Calendar page and the updated 2019 Player’s Manual is also posted.

Not sure how you all are feeling but I can’t believe that June, our second month of club play, has come and gone. With the end of June we have now completed our second mini tournament, the Scotch 2 Ball, and all of our interclub play (Marshall and Podersky Cup competitions). Check out the Winners/Results page for Tournament, Proximity and Loonie Pot results. Marshall and Podersky results will be published once they are available.

Speaking of Podersky, during the interclub competition on June 28, Margaret Li of our club got her first ACE on the 5th hole at the Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club. Congratulations Margaret!

July will see our second major tournament (Better Ball) played on July 8th as well as our two Visiting Days – July 24 at Mill Woods and July 31 at Edmonton Country Club (rescheduled from July 3), and the Summer Mixer which is coordinated by the Men’s Club. Details for all can be found on the News page. Also in July is the EGA Amateur, Sr. Amateur, and Super Sr. Amateur Tournament which will be played on July 15 at Raven Crest and July 16 at Glendale Golf clubs. We have a number of our members playing in this competition and we wish them all two great days of good golf. Best of luck to you all!

If you have photos, related to club play or activities, that are appropriate to showcase, please forward them to webmaster at mwlgc.ca and I will be sure to post. Please make sure that everyone in the photos are okay with having their picture posted on the website.

We are just one month into the 2018 MWLGC season and so much has already happened, with much more on the horizon.

Our club play started on May 1 and we have had some pretty amazing weather for the most part. Two tournaments have been held and we have a whole lot of winners for the weekly proximity prizes and loonie pots. You can check out the results for the tournaments and the weekly prizes on the Winners/Results page of our website.

Our Scotch 2 Ball tournament is on June 26 with the cut-off on June 14. If you haven’t already signed up, the sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the club room behind the restaurant. This is a mini tournament that is held on Tuesday during club play and is followed by a meal. To participate in this tournament you must have a handicap. More details are posted along with the sign-up sheets.

Also coming up is our second weekend tournament, the Better Ball Tournament which will be held on July 8. Sign up will be starting on June 12 in the Pro Shop. Cost is $15.00 per player. This is a tournament that you play with a partner, so be sure to indicate to the Pro Shop when you sign up who your playing partner will be, you both must have a handicap for this tournament.

Our Visiting Day  Committee, Sandra Hlus and Carol Thachyk, have been busy at work planning and organizing the visiting days with our reciprocal clubs. We will be visiting Edmonton Country Club on July 3 and hosting Riverside on July 24. All the details on when and how to sign-up to participate is located on the NEWS page of our website.

There have been some changes to the Calendar of Activities for the Mill Woods Ladies Golf Club and the calendar on the website has now been updated.

In response to a suggestion, there is also a printable Schedule of MWLGC Activities for 2018 on the calendar page, just below the calendar. Personally I plan to print this out and post on my fridge so that I can keep better track of what’s happening when. In addition, there is also a section now called Pin Days at a Glance, just below the printable schedule link. I know I can never remember if it is a Pin Day or not – yesterday being no exception. This is also included on the printable schedule mentioned above.

I appreciate getting your feedback for improvements to the website and how important information can be conveyed to the club as a whole. Thank you to Robbi Checknita for suggesting the printable schedule. I believe this will be a valuable addition for our membership.

The 2018 season was kicked off with our annual Spring Social on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018.

With approximately 104 members in attendance the brief MWLGC Business Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. The October 2017 Fall Meeting minutes (can be read here), 2017 Final Financials & 2018 Proposed Budget were reviewed and accepted. The 2018 proposed budget showed a $1500 loss but this is always dependent upon how many ladies participate in each event. Gift card amounts could be adjusted to compensate if this is needed.

Marian Reed, our President introduced this year’s Executive along with Janice Martin who is our Web Master.

Club play will begin May 1 –  with the Day Ladies tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. and the Business Ladies at 3:30 p.m. (the first hour for business is designated specifically for 18 hole golfers so they will be able to finish their round). Tee-on will be open to book Tuesday the week prior beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Golf Canada Membership cards and personalized labels can be ordered online @ www.albertagolf.org.

The Business portion of the evening was adjourned at 7:19 p.m.

Joan Kirillo (Course Business Manager) came to the meeting and gave an update on the golf course:

• They are currently plowing the driving range to be able to open this soon

• May 4 (1-6 p.m.) is Demo Day – TaylorMade will be coming out with their clubs to try out for any interested golfers

• The Pro Shop gives the Ladies Membership a 20% discount all year long

• Joan is available to help anyone needing help with the booking or handicap system

• Golf cart cost has changed this year to $20 per seat for 18 holes or $10 per seat for 9 holes

• 3 years ago the City took over the roadway into the course along with our parking lot. She asked everyone to call 311 to report all the pot holes.

• Golf rates have gone up $2 for 18 holes this year. This is the first increase in 3 years – mostly due to the carbon tax and higher minimum wage.

• For our weekend tournaments, we will once again be allowed to use our weekday tickets and pay the difference

Jan Loree-Symon (Club Captain) welcomed the new members and explained some of the activities (the weekly proximity & loonie pot prizes, ringer board, pin days, match play (day ladies), summer mixer, tournaments and interclub tournaments (Marshall & Podersky) and visitor days. She also reviewed the Etiquette and Pace of Play (POP) stressing how important it is to follow this. The handbook on the website contains all the detailed information.

Janice Martin gave an overview of the information contained on our Website (www.mwlgc.ca). This has now been up and running for 4 years. Ladies can sign up to get a notice when any new items are posted to our website.

Elaine Shannon advised she would be unable to organize the Mystery Tour this year, but two volunteers stepped forward (Wendy Sheehan & Maria Medeiros) so watch for details on this fun event as the season progresses.

Marian Reed reminded everyone that they could sign up throughout the evening for: the New Member Orientation, Rules & Handicap Clinic, Spring Swing Lessons with Bruce, Marshall & Podersky dates. Sign up sheets will also be posted on our MWLGC Board upstairs in the club room (behind the restaurant).

Booking protocol was reviewed: any empty tee times will be filled by the Pro Shop if we do not fill them up. Please call the Pro Shop or cancel online if you are unable to make your tee-time. Let Dallas Schroeder (Membership Coordinator) know if you did not receive our Spring Newsletter so we can check to make sure we have your correct e-mail.

Then the real fun began and everyone was able to enjoy a beverage and snacks as our Executive modelled some of the new fashions available from the Pro Shop.

It was a great evening full of information, opportunities to reconnect, and lots of fun! Now we just need the weather to cooperate so we can all hit the links!
